The Ehen is yet another west coast river that, on the right day, can punch well above its weight. This clear , medium sized river drains Ennerdale Water and after passing through Egremont enters the sea at Sellafield - a distance of not much more than ten miles. The whole river is designated a Special Area of Conservation as a result of its population of rare freshwater pearl mussels.
The river isn't noted for its brown trout population but does get a run of sea trout , although nothing like the numbers of a few years ago. The main interest is for the salmon which start to turn up from August onwards with the best of the fishing in September and October. As with most of these spate rivers the timing of the runs is very water dependant but in a good year the number of fish caught can reach very respectable levels.
Most of the fishing on the Ehen is controlled by the two local angling clubs. Egremont Angling Association have several miles of water, the bulk of which is downstream from Egremont. Wath Brow and Ennerdale Angling Association control much of the upper half of the river.
Both clubs issue very reasonably priced weekly and season permits to visitors.
