The Rothay starts life above Dunmail Raise before passing through Grasmere and Rydal Water en route to Windermere. The Brathay drains Langdale before joining the Rothay just above the confluence with Windermere. Both rivers are generally fished only in the lower reaches although small trout are present throughout their length.
WADAA control the most accessible fishing on both rivers namely - the Rothay from the A593 to Windermere, upstream from Miller Bridge to Pelter Bridge and the section between Rydal Water and Grasmere. On the Brathay their water is downstream to Windermere from Brathay Church. For other sections enquire locally - i.e.the farm.
Good fly water is limited although the more adventurous will always find a way. The locals tend to use worm or spinner. Both rivers hold variable stocks of trout averaging 8oz - 12oz with bigger fish turning up fairly frequently especially after a spate when trout move in from the lake. Very occasional late season salmon and sea trout turn up - but don't hold your breath. There are also rumours of chub and I can confirm roach are present if transient!
Both rivers can be fished under WADAA's Wild Trout Permit which is available either online, from Ambleside TIC or Waterhead Marine. The cost is £8.00 per day.
