Simpson Ground

18.08.11 The old green boat has been repaired and can now be booked for single angler use.

WADAA members have exclusive access to this fishery which offers a uniquely different challenge on a quiet , private and very scenic tarn.

Please note that Simpson Ground supplies untreated water to a number of nearby properties. Do not contaminate the water in any way.

The fishery holds a resident stock of brown trout of good average size and some of which reach 3lb  In addition the association maintains a supplementary stocking of rainbows averaging 2lbs with a few larger specimens. Simpson Ground is strictly catch and release only for both brown and rainbow trout until 1st October after which rainbow trout may be retained.

Access around the fishery is not easy with only a limited number of good bank fishing spots. Elsewhere high banks, vegetation and boggy ground lend a distinctly rugged feel to the water and will demand an energetic and adventurous approach to the fishing. Fishing from the dam is not permitted - the reason will be obvious when you see it!

This is a rich fishery with extensive weedbeds and overall fish tend to be less free rising than in some of our other waters - although evening buzzer hatches can see them on the surface in quantity. Prospecting with nymphs can be very effective as can traditional loch style from either boat or bank.

The club has boats available for members use which may be reserved in advance. The use of these boats is subject to the safety procedures detailed here. You will need to purchase a key if you wish to use them and you will also be required to provide your own lifejacket.   Float tubes are also permitted on this fishery.

There is a limit of four rods per day on this water and you must pre book to visit this fishery through the Association Manager. Telephone Neil on 015395 35630.

Map & Directions

Go past the fishery at High Newton and through the gate at the eastern end. Follow the unfenced road for a couple of hundred yards until the junction signed 'Simpson Ground'. This unfenced road leads to the fishery after a mile or so. Drive carefully and watch out for stock particularly at lambing time.

Parking for the fishery is on the left immediately after the last cattle grid and before you reach Simpson Ground Farm. It is signed. From here it is a five minute level walk to the fishery. Continue down the lane and go through the gate at the left of the house. Take the track to the left which leads to a gate into the forestry and then to the tarn.
